"Tatsächlich ist der für eine Novelle typische Wendepunkt da deutlich zu erkennen, wo Mahlke das Ritterkreuz des Kapitänleutnants entwendet und Oberstudienrat Klohse darin - vielleicht in Anlehnung an Goethes berühmte Novellendefinition - etwas "Unerhörtes“ sieht.
Mahlke führt einen verzweifelten Kampf um seine Integration, um die Schließung des existentiellen Risses zwischen »Katz« und »Maus«, und wird doch im Sieg endgültig scheitern. Auch das Ritterkreuz, von dem er sich − Perversion der Zeit gemäß − Erlösung durch Bedeckung seiner Blöße erhofft, verhilft ihm nicht zum Frieden mit der Welt.
Katz und Maus geschrieben von Günter Grass Katz und Maus handelt von einem Jungen namens Joachim Mahlke, der in vielen Dingen etwas anders ist als andere Jungen. Der Erzähler ist Heine Pilenz, der versucht eine Schuld, die er in bezug auf Joachim Mahlke verspürt, zu verarbeiten, der sich allerdings auf der anderen Seite bewusst darüber ist, dass er vom Autor erfunden worden ist.
Im Vergleich zur "Blechtrommel" ist "Katz und Maus" allerdings viel kürzer, wird deshalb auch nicht als Roman, sondern als Novelle bezeichnet. Darin kann Grass seine Fabulierkunst nach meinem Empfinden nicht so wie in einem Roman entfalten, das macht dieses Buch schwächer als die Blechtrommel.
Seine Novelle „Katz und Maus“ bildet (gemeinsam mit dem 1959 erschienenen Roman „Die Blechtrommel“ und dem 1963 veröffentlichten Werk „Hundejahre“) den zweiten Teil der „Danziger Trilogie“, einer – aus drei sehr unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und Stilen geschilderten – literarischen Umsetzung der Kindheit und Jugend im Dritten Reich.
Katz und Maus trug ursprünglich den Titel Der Ritterkreuzträger und war Bestandteil des Romans Hundejahre, des dritten Teils der so genannten Danziger Trilogie. Günter Grass erkannte während des Schreibens aber, dass sich in der Geschichte eine Novelle verbarg, und beschloss, sie getrennt zu veröffentlichen.
